MONDAY

Cherokee County Genealogical Society celebrates 35 years

The Cherokee County Genealogical Society will celebrate its 35th anniversary at 7 p.m. Monday at Bonner Place in Jacksonville. The club was founded in May 1975. All charter members, former members and those interested in genealogy are invited to come and share their memories and experiences during the celebration. Installation of the officers for the year is scheduled. Regular monthly meetings are at 7 p.m. the second Monday of the month, September through May, at Bonner Place.

Chamber holds hospitality seminar

The Jacksonville Chamber of Commerce will hold a hospitality seminar and luncheon beginning 11:30 a.m. Tuesday at the Norman Activity Center, 526 E. Commerce. Topic of the day will be “Attitude is Everything” and guest speaker is Breezy Lake, director of hospitality administration at Lon Morris College. Advance reservations are required by May 7. Crown Health presents info about COPD

Crown Health Services will hold a free information presentation about COPD 2-3 p.m. Wednesday at the Jacksonville Senior Citizens Center. The presentation is open to the public. Health professionals will be on hand to conduct free blood pressure checks. Light refreshments will be served. Come join the Crown Health team for an afternoon of information and fun. RSH governing body meets

The Governing Body of Rusk State Hospital will meet at the hospital Wednesday beginning at 9 a.m. in the Quality Management Department, Building 501, Austin Room.  The governing body meets to accept written and verbal reports presented by the hospital administration. At the beginning of this meeting, the public is invited to make comments relevant to the management of the hospital.  Persons wanting to be on the public forum portion of the meeting can contact the office of the Rusk State Hospital superintendent, (903) 683-7297 to be placed on the public forum agenda.  Public comments are limited to three minutes per person.

Women’s Health Week lunch-brunch held

A lunch-brunch in celebration of National Women’s Health Week will be held 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. May 13 at the HOPE office. Meeting about proposed JISD Academy

An information meeting regarding the proposed JISD Academy will be held at 7 p.m. May 13 in the gym of First Baptist Church. Anyone interested in learning about the academy is invited to attend.

TCCA presents

Tyler Community Concert Association is presenting the wonderfully talented a cappella group Chapter 6.  The concert will be held at Caldwell Auditorium on Friday, May 14th at 7:30 p.m.  Tickets for the single performance are available for $25.00 and can be purchased at the door, or by contacting the T.C.C.A. office at 903-592-6266, or by visiting the web site at www.tcca.biz.  Tickets are also available for the eight concert 2010-2011 season featuring John Davidson, Buddy Jewell, The Gibson Brothers, Narducci and Sieden, Eric Himy, Jason Floyd Coleman, Jim Witter, and The East Texas Handbell Ensemble’s Christmas program for the low price of $60.00.

West Shady Grove Cemetery holds business meeting

The West Shady Grove Cemetery annual business meeting is set for May 15 at Pierce’s Chapel Methodist Church. Registration begins at 10 a.m. with the business meeting at 11 a.m. A potluck lunch will follow in the fellowship hall. Donations are being accepted for maintenance.

Compassionate Friends hold butterfly release

Summer Youth Program holds registration

The Cherokee County Summer Youth Program will hold a registration 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. May 15 in the Lon Morris College cafeteria. The daily program will begin at 7 a.m. June 7 and will be held daily 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday during the months of June, July and August. Cost is $12 per day or $60 per week per child for ages 5-14. Volunteers aged 15 and up are also being sought to work at the camp. Master Gardeners hold garden tour

The Cherokee County Master Gardener Association will host its 6th Annual Garden Tour of Homes benefiting HOPE 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. May 22. Gardens on the tour this year include the Cherokee County Master Gardener Demonstration Garden in the Ruth Bowling Nichols Arboretum located at the Texas Forest Service, 1015 SE Loop 456, Dr. & Mrs. Michael Banks, 2008 Harvard Dr., Mr. & Mrs. Eldridge Moak, 220 Beach St., Mr. &  Mrs. Terry Morrow, 1905 O’Keefe Rd. and the Central East Texas Orchid Society show and sale at HOPE, 595 So. Ragsdale.  Emily Farmer of Snaps Photography will be available for family portraits at the Morrow’s garden.  All locations are in Jacksonville.  Garden tour tickets are $5 and may be purchased in advance at the HOPE office, Jacksonville Chamber of Commerce, from participating Master Gardeners or any of the gardens on tour day. Box lunches ($7 each) will be available at HOPE but must be reserved by Thursday, May 20. LMC holds Spring Ranch Rodeo

The Lon Morris College Agriculture Department is hosting the Spring Ranch Rodeo, the new department’s kick-off event, 10 a.m. May 22 at the Lon Morris College arena. Books open at 8 a.m. The event is limited to 15 teams, and entry fee is $500 per four-man team. Cash and prizes awarded: paying the top three teams, champion buckles, top hand buckle and top horse custom pulling collar. An original painting by Heather Burris will also be raffled. Community street fair set in Rusk

The Cherokee County AgriLife Extension Agency will hold the “Strengthening the Community” street fair in conjunction with the Rusk Singletary Memorial Library's annual summer reading program kick-off on June 8, in front of the Courthouse Annex and library on Henderson Street in Rusk. JHS Class of ‘90 reunites

The JHS Class of 1990 will hold its 20 year reunion the afternoon of July 16 and all day July 17. The get together will be at the huts at Lake Jacksonville until 6 p.m. July 17. The day will conclude with a casual dress event at The Legacy 7 p.m. to midnight. Cost is $35 per person, and payment must be received by June 17. HOPE offers transportation schedule

The HOPE van offers rides to anywhere in the Jacksonville city limits during regular business hours Monday through Thursday. Anyone needing a ride can call 903-586-7781 or 903-393-1921 to make an appointment or to be picked up.

Community Kitchen for HOPE open

The Community Kitchen for HOPE serves breakfast and lunch, free of charge, Monday through Friday to anyone who shows up. Breakfast is served 8:30-9:30 a.m. Lunch is served 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. The kitchen is at 595 S. Ragsdale St., Jacksonville.

Rusk offers public transportation

The city of Rusk’s bus service operates within the city limits Monday through Friday. Boarding fee is $1 and entitles the rider to two stops. Additional stops cost 50 cents. There is no charge for the return trip home. Rusk senior citizens and disabled can call 903-683-2213 for pickup or for more details.

YMCA holds after-school care

The YMCA will begin offering after-school care in Jacksonville this fall at West Side Elementary. The cost is $30 per child, with a discounted rate for each additional child. To apply for care or to work part-time at the after-school program at West Side, call the YMCA in Tyler at 903-593-7327.

Alcoholics Anonymous offers Jacksonville Recovery Group

Alcoholics Anonymous conducts meetings every week at 316 West Larissa St. The meetings take place Monday through Saturday at noon, and Nov. 2 through Sunday at 8 p.m.

Healing Room offered

River of Life Christian Church in Rusk has recently opened a Healing Room in which they offer prayer free of charge to anyone in need of healing. Family seeks information about grave desecration

The family of Carmen Leanna Jenkins is looking for the person or persons who have been desecrating Carmen’s grave. Carmen passed away Dec. 20, 2008, and the lights from her grave have been stolen several times. A reward has been offered for the capture of whoever is taking them. Account set up for cancer patient

Post 9/11 GI Bill offered

The VA is accepting applications for the Post 9/11 GI Bill now. Individuals with active duty service since Sept. 11, 2001, may be eligible for this benefit and can apply online at www.GIBILL.VA.gov. The program provides tuition assistance, a housing allowance, a books and supplies stipend, and the option to transfer these benefits to family members under certain circumstances. The city of Jacksonville-sponsored organization, Keep Jacksonville Beautiful, is asking for citizens’ help in getting rid of the litter along the streets and roads. HAMM open for tours

The Historical Aviation Memorial Museum is open for aviation fans from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday-Saturday and 1 to 5 p.m. Sunday. The museum includes exhibits, meeting rooms, a gift shop, the largest collection of aviation art in East Texas, aircraft memorabilia and military aircraft. The museum is closed Monday.
