Crown Health holds blood pressure seminar
Crown Health Services will hold a free information presentation about high blood pressure 2-4 p.m. April 29 at the Jacksonville Public Library. The presentation is open to the public. Topics covered will include how to manage high blood pressure as well as the signs and symptoms of stroke and heart attack. Health professionals will be on hand to conduct free blood pressure checks. The 2010 Cherokee County Relay for Life will be on April 30 at Mauldin Field on the campus of Jacksonville High School. All survivors of cancer and any and all with a passion for defeating the disease of cancer are invited to become involved with this committee and this cause. RSH Relay for Life team holds raffle
The Rusk State Hospital Relay for Life team “Goal Line Defense†is holding a gift basket, quilt and lap quilt raffle for the Relay for Life fundraiser. Two drawings will be held for the gift baskets (one is of lesser value) that contail oil changes, beauty products, a hair cut, candle, candle chips, food gift cards, Bio Freeze products, a cell phone holder, Gourmet Garden items and various food coupons. The quilt and lap quilt are hand made. Tickets are $1 each or six for $5. The raffles will be held the night of the Relay. Tickets may be purchased at the RSH canteen, Lady Jane’s Antique Mall, and Lindsey’s Grocery in Alto.

Jacksonville Christian School holds crawfish boil
Jacksonville Christian School will hold a crawfish boil 11:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. May 1 in front of Super Gallo Mercado, 1009 S. Jackson. Master Gardeners hold plant sale
The Cherokee County Master Gardeners Association will hold their annual Spring Plant Sale Saturday at the Texas Forest Service located at 1015 SE Loop 456 in Jacksonville. The sale will be 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. This year there will also be Mini Seminars beginning at 10 a.m. with discussion on Composting, Propagation, Deer resistant plants, Aggressive/Invasive plants and Daylilies. Most plants will be Master Gardener member grown. There will also be Specialty growers from outside Cherokee County offering unique plants. A large variety of flowering trees and shrubs will also be available. Come early for best selection. If your landscape suffered from this past winter freezes come get some nice replacement plants and discuss gardening ideas. While you are here you may also wish to visit the Ruth B. Nichols Arboretum, the Master Gardener’s Demonstration Garden and our new project, the Hazel Tilton Outdoor Classroom.  This fund raising event helps support CCMGA projects that beautify our county. Please come out and support our efforts. Aquafina/MLB Pitch, Hit & Run coming to town
Jacksonville’s Central Baptist Church will host a free Aquafina/Major League Baseball Pitch, Hit & Run Competition for area youth at 9 a.m. on May 1. The event will take place at the Jacksonville Athletic Complex football practice fields (back fields). Pitch, Hit & Run is the official skills competition of Major League Baseball. The program is designed to provide youngsters with an opportunity to compete, at no charge, in a competition that recognizes individual excellence in core baseball/softball skills. Competitors are divided into four age groups: 7/8, 9/10, 11/12, and 13/14 and have the chance to advance through four levels of competition, including team championships at Major League ballparks. All participants must bring a copy of their birth certificate and fill out a registration/wavier form prior to the start of the competition. For more information contact Steve Edwards, 903-586-2215. Reese homecoming set
The Reese homecoming will be 10 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. May 1 at the Reese Community Center. All proceeds will benefit maintenance of the Reese Cemetery and the Reese Community Center. Session scheduled for bird lovers
Bird lovers interested in learning more about feathered fliers are invited to attend a three-hour study session on ornithology sponsored by East Texas Master Naturalists at 9 a.m. May 1. Jeff Kopachena, associate professor and head of the Behavioral and Wildlife Ecology Department the Texas A&M University Commerce campus, will direct the program which is free and open to the public. Kopachena has published numerous articles on reptiles and birds, including on painted and indigo buntings in Northeast Texas. The program begins at 9 a.m. in the visitor center at the Nature Center Texas Parks and Wildlife at 11942 FM 848 southeast of Tyler.
East Texas Avengers hold memorial run and cross placement
In recognition of May as Motorcycle Safety and Awareness Month, the East Texas Avengers Chapter of Texas Motorcycle Rights Association is sponsoring a Memorial Run and Cross Placement Ceremonies to honor the memory of six area motorcyclists who lost their lives as a result of accidents that were not their fault. Those wishing to participate should begin gathering at 1:00 pm Sat. May 1st on the grass lot south of Northtown Tire Co.- across from Razorback Grocery on Hwy. 69 N, in Jacksonville. A Red Cross Ceremony honoring David Bellows will start at 1:30 pm. From there ,the Run will visit the accident sites of four others and end with a Ceremony honoring Darrell Bales at his accident site. Corporate spelling bee held
The annual Corporate Spelling Bee contest will be held on Wednesday, May 5th, in the Normal Activity Center from 11:30-1:00 PM. Tickets are $10 for the program and a Mexican food lunch. Proceeds will benefit the Jacksonville Literacy Council. Local business are sponsoring spelling teams who compete for the title of corporate city spelling champion and literacy patron. A spirit award is given to the team that has the most supporters cheering for them during the event.

Maydelle VFD seeks donations for garage sale
 The Maydelle Volunteer Fire Department is now accepting donations of garage sale items for a garage and bakesale to be held on May 7 and 8. We also still have cookbooks for sale. All proceeds go to the Maydelle VFD. Dance held in Rusk
The Mr. and Mrs. E.C. Ross Memorial Dance will be held from 6:30 to 11 p.m. Saturday, May 8, at the Rusk Civic Center, 555 Euclid St., Rusk. Admission will be $3 per person, $5 per couple. Proceeds from the event will benefit the establishment of the Rusk Senior Citizens Activity Center, to be housed at the Civic Center. Concessions will be offered by the Friends of the Singletary Memorial Library. The dance is open to the community.

RSH governing body meets
The Governing Body of Rusk State Hospital will meet at the hospital Wednesday, May 12 beginning at 9:00 a.m. in the Quality Management Department, Building 501, Austin Room. The governing body meets to accept written and verbal reports presented by the hospital administration. At the beginning of this meeting, the public is invited to make comments relevant to the management of the hospital. Persons wanting to be on the public forum portion of the meeting can contact the office of the Rusk State Hospital superintendent, (903) 683-7297 to be placed on the public forum agenda. Public comments are limited to three minutes per person.

Master Gardeners hold garden tour
The Cherokee County Master Gardener Association will host its 6th Annual Garden Tour of Homes benefiting HOPE 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. May 22. Gardens on the tour this year include the Cherokee County Master Gardener Demonstration Garden in the Ruth Bowling Nichols Arboretum located at the Texas Forest Service, 1015 SE Loop 456, Dr. & Mrs. Michael Banks, 2008 Harvard Dr., Mr. & Mrs. Eldridge Moak, 220 Beach St., Mr. & Mrs. Terry Morrow, 1905 O’Keefe Rd. and the Central East Texas Orchid Society show and sale at HOPE, 595 So. Ragsdale. Emily Farmer of Snaps Photography will be available for family portraits at the Morrow’s garden. All locations are in Jacksonville. Garden tour tickets are $5 and may be purchased in advance at the HOPE office, Jacksonville Chamber of Commerce, from participating Master Gardeners or any of the gardens on tour day. LMC holds Spring Ranch Rodeo
The Lon Morris College Agriculture Department is hosting the Spring Ranch Rodeo, the new department’s kick-off event, 10 a.m. May 22 at the Lon Morris College arena. Books open at 8 a.m. The event is limited to 15 teams, and entry fee is $500 per four-man team. Cash and prizes awarded: paying the top three teams, champion buckles, top hand buckle and top horse custom pulling collar. An original painting by Heather Burris will also be raffled. Community Kitchen for HOPE open
The Community Kitchen for HOPE serves breakfast and lunch, free of charge, Monday through Friday to anyone who shows up. Breakfast is served 8:30-9:30 a.m. Lunch is served 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. The kitchen is at 595 S. Ragsdale St., Jacksonville.
Rusk offers public transportation
The city of Rusk’s bus service operates within the city limits Monday through Friday. Boarding fee is $1 and entitles the rider to two stops. Additional stops cost 50 cents. There is no charge for the return trip home. Rusk senior citizens and disabled can call 903-683-2213 for pickup or for more details.
YMCA holds after-school care
The YMCA will begin offering after-school care in Jacksonville this fall at West Side Elementary. The cost is $30 per child, with a discounted rate for each additional child. To apply for care or to work part-time at the after-school program at West Side, call the YMCA in Tyler at 903-593-7327.

Family seeks information about grave desecration
The family of Carmen Leanna Jenkins is looking for the person or persons who have been desecrating Carmen’s grave. Carmen passed away Dec. 20, 2008, and the lights from her grave have been stolen several times. A reward has been offered for the capture of whoever is taking them. Post 9/11 GI Bill offered
The VA is accepting applications for the Post 9/11 GI Bill now. Individuals with active duty service since Sept. 11, 2001, may be eligible for this benefit and can apply online at www.GIBILL.VA.gov. HAMM open for tours
