Newsmaker: Richard Gribenas

Age: 60

Occupation: Owner of Pixie Studio, a Swissvale photography business opened by his father in 1951

Education: Associate's degree

Background: Gribenas operates Pixie Studio, which takes family portraits and children's and wedding pictures, among others. He retired last year from the Army Reserve, which he joined 34 years ago. He did two tours of duty overseas, in 2003 in Iraq and in 2007-08 in Afghanistan. Gribenas worked as a photographer and military historian, which included gathering documentation and factual accounts of battles and troop deployments -- which he submitted to the Army Center of Military History.

Noteworthy: Gribenas was voted Imagemaker/Photographer of the Year at the 2010 Professional Photographers Association of Pennsylvania Convention this month in State College.

Quote: "I enjoy being able to create memories for families and for couples at their weddings, and carrying on the tradition of a family business. At the end of the day, what do we have? It's memories. People look back and cherish photographs."
